MINUTES for November 25, 2008 Meeting of the Gatesburg Bicentennial Committee
ATTENDEES; Ken and Jeri Lynn Schumacher, Dan Rhodes, Jim Harpster, Denny Moore, Ernie Harpster, Susan Smith, Jeanne Siphron, Jenny Barto, Carl Gates and Diane Snyder.
MINUTES, written by Maria Rhodes, were read by Denny Moore and applauded.
OLD BUSINESS:
Military Memorial: Maria had spoken to Mayes Memorials who will negotiate with us when Ernie sends them a complete list of military names.
A lengthy presentation was given by Ernie who found on the internet an alternative source (International Bronze) for a memorial. Discussion was held about the price being considerably less than Mayes. Ernie will produce legible copies of the list of military personnel so that corrections can be made. He will speak to both Mayes Memorials and International Bronze and report to the committee at its next meeting on December 18, 2008 at 7 p.m.
PHOTO COMMITTEE:
The photo committee has set December 18, 2008 at 9 a.m. for the next meeting.
GUEST BOOK: Diane Snyder is in charge.
BOOKLET: O.K. for now. Much work is ahead.
TOWNSHIP: Mute for now.
PARADE: There was a lively discussion about the parade route.
Horses will be prohibited because of potential danger to the
parade watchers.
Vicar Joe will be the honorary Marshall.
PICNIC: Bob Stocks and Carl Gates will grow corn for the occasion. Dave Hubner, restaurateur, has offered his help.
Bruce Berky might bring his steam tractor to make bean soup.
A few musical groups are interested in entertaining.
MILITARY REENACTMENT CAMP: O.K. for now.
BLACKSMITH: Bob Rider will do the honors using his grandfather, Willis Schilling’s legacy of equipment.
COOK BOOK: The price will be $15.00 each. An order form Will be drawn up for pre-bicentennial sales.
POTTERY: The question was raised whether we should continue with pottery or change to porcelain which is cheaper. A cry went up for pottery, but no decision was made.
CHARCOAL MAKING: Ernie has it under control.
FIREWORKS: There were fireworks when the cost was reported. The permits required are prohibitive. The consensus was to have sparklers and bottle rockets (and others that are legal in Pennsylvania) in lieu of fireworks.
LOGO: Maria sent a sample logo which was well received, with a few possible changes which will be discussed with Maria.
NEW BUSINESS: Freda Barto’s name is to be added as working with Jeanne Siphron on election day, handing out bicentennial flyers.
Maria sent to the meeting her idea of having a bicentennial checking account set up with a local bank. The bank is yet to be chosen. Two people (unrelated to each other) would be required to make transactions together. Bills would be submitted to the committee before approval. In this way we would not need an EIN number and would not have to wait a long time to get it. Diane Snyder would be the treasurer and Denny Moore would work with her,
The suggestion was made to do title searches of all the local farms. Jeanne gasped, having done many during the past 15 years. The process is difficult and painfully tedious. Ernie had the impression that it was easy. The only people for whom it is easy are the professionals. Someone suggested that Dora Lou Harpster do it. Ernie will ask her.
Respectfully submitted,
