Gatesburg Historical Society
1. Attendees
Those in attendance were Denny Moore, Ernie Harpster, Susan Smith, Jeannie Siphron, Carla Gates, Diane Snyder, Jenny Barto, Ken Vasko, Jerilynn Schumacher, Dan and Maria Rhodes.
2. Minutes:
The minutes were read by Maria Rhodes. Jerilynn made a comment on the costs for advertising. The cost for the Centre Daily Times will be $161.00 for three days.
3. Old Business
a. Military Memorial
Ernie presented a sample of work from Steve Miska. The sample presented was printed in l/4” and the capitals were 3/8”. Steve suggested, however, that we go with the ¼” lettering. Steve provided a catalog to review. The borders can vary. The price provided was a square embossed plain border. There would be no significant increase in cost if we used a more decorative frame.
On hand we have $3,350.00 towards the monument. The monument may be encased in brick. Jeannie asked where the monument would be placed. Ernie said at this time plans were to have it at the base of the flag pole on the church property.
It was the consensus of the committee that we go with Steve Miska with the lettering sample presented to the committee. A discussion was held as to adding names. Ernie said he would discuss this problem with Steve and report back to the committee.
Ernie has donations pledged of bricks to encase the monument.
Ernie’s estimate to do this work has been reduced from $10,000.00 to $3 to $5,000.00.
A discussion was held on what was going to happen to any money that may be remaining from this. A suggestion was made to give the balance of funds over to the Gatesburg Lutheran Church to maintain the memorial. Denny Moore will approach the Church’s council on this matter. Ernie will approach Steve Miska on providing a more definitive amount based on a plain gold border, same size lettering as the sample provided with a black background.
b. Report from Photo Committee
A meeting was held on Jan. 20, 2009. Jeannie Siphron reported they thoroughly reviewed more photos. Jeannie believes we are about half way there.
c. Guest Book
Nothing new to report.
d. Booklet
Maria presented the quotes from Keith Barr on the booklet. Ernie said we already have approximately 150 pages of pictures/articles and Keith’s estimate was based on 72 pages. Jerilynn explained the difference between the lithograph verses docutech printing. Lithograph would be “setting” by the Printers, docutech would have to be organized, typed, set and submitted as we would want it to appear.
Jerilynn will contact Keith Barr and discuss with him the requirements for both the booklet and calendars.
e. Township
Denny reported that he and Denny meet with Mark Kunkle, Township Manager. The permit for the parade could not be obtained because the police contact person was not available. It was mentioned to them we may need to erect a tent. An application has been made available to erect a tent.
f. Parade
Denny has been contacting people in several areas; tractors, floats, fire trucks, and business vehicles. A 40 piece traveling band contacted Denny concerning. Denny provided them some general information. They asked if we would pay them and Denny’s answer was no. Nothing more has been heard from them.
g. Picnic
Ernie reported Randy Barger is going to be preparing the pork/hog for the pork roast. Randy wants to know how many people should he prepare for. Some discussion was held on this but no definitive planning was made. Denny will contact Bruce Berky to bring his steam engine and prepare bean soup.
h. Military Reenactment Camp
Ernie spoke with Mike Houseknect and he gave his permission for the encampment to set up on his land along Rhodes Farm Lane. Ernie also asked if we could park in the land adjacent to the church property. Denny would like to also park the antique vehicles in this area. Mike seemed to have no problem with using his property to accommodate our needs. However, a crop may be on the land adjacent to the church property which may prohibit us from using it..
i. Black Smith
No change.
j. Cook Book
Ernie asked Dorothy to generate an order form.
k. Pottery
Ernie presented samples of the cups, mugs and large jar with Gatesburg clay in them. The samples were well received by the committee; everyone expressed their pleasure with the samples.
Based on the committee’s discussion, 150 jars will be ordered and 300 mugs (150 of each design, wheelbarrow/miner). The question was asked if plates would be available. Ernie will check on this for the committee.
l. Charcoal Making
Ernie reported he thinks he will have enough of help/volunteers. Wood is already cut, stacked and is drying.
m. Fire Works
Ernie had nothing new to report.
n. Logo
The logo was discussed. It was the consensus of the committee to allow Jerilynn and Ken to rework the logo. However, it is possible we may just use the “map” as provided by David Siphron which he obtained from the Paterno Library and submitted to the committee last summer.
4. Financial Report
Denny reported there is $500.00 in the bank account. Diane asked if that money is dedicated towards the memorial. Danny presented $1,000.00 from the Dunlap-Meckly-Dean VFW 5825 earmarked for the memorial. Ernie also presented $100.00 from James Harpster of Pine Grove Mills.
5. New Business
Denny will be sending out thank you notes to those who have donated monies towards the memorial.
Ken suggested we look into having porta potties available.
