Gatesburg Minutes
1. Call to Order
Dan and Maria Rhodes, Denny Moore, Ernie Harpster, Lindsey Harpster, Jeannie Siphron, Diane Snyder, Jenny Barto, Jerilynn Schumacher, Jim Harpster, Anna Margaret Peters and Ken Vasko were in attendance. Guest and book co-author of Rails to Penn State, Mike Bezilla was also present.
2. Minutes
The minutes of the meeting held on May 12, 2009 were read. There were no comments or connections.
3. Budget/Financial Reports
Ken and Diane gave an update on contributions towards the general and memorial funds made to date and orders for sales of cookbooks, jars, etc.
A copy of the financial report will be made as part of the minutes.
4. Time Line Review
No review was done on this item.
5. Committee Reports
A. Military Memorial
Danny suggested creating a “time capsule” to be placed on the memorial site. The committee unanimously agreed. Ernie will discuss this with the masonries.
Denny Moore reported that Dave Strouse would be more than happy to play taps at the memorial dedications.
B. Book/Photo Committee
Jeannie reported that the committee has “inventoried” the original photos against the scanned photos and it is progressing well. Jerry has completed another chapter to the book.
C. Guest Book
Nothing new to report.
D. Township
Nothing new to report.
E. Parade
Denny presented a template of the invitation for the parade participants to be sent out and returned to him or Dan. Once all the invitations have been received, Dan and Denny will begin laying out the parade.
F. Picnic
Dannon Water will donate 20 cases of water. Denny is still waiting to hear from Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart and Weis Store.
Jerry reported that someone asked when tickets would be available for purchase. Discussion ensued. Ernie suggested waiting until the next meeting to make a decision.
A 60’ tent will be made available, per Ernie Harpster plus benches and tables.
G. Military Reenactment
Nothing new to report.
H. Blacksmith/Shingle Mill
Ernie reported that Bobby Rider will be available for blacksmithing. He will have a limited amount of wrought iron items for sale.
Ernie reported that a branding iron will be available for the shingles. Lindsey asked if a cost was going to be assessed for the shingles and Anna Margaret suggested $1.00 a piece.
I. Cookbook
Ernie reported the cookbook is finished. A cover was picked (light gold). A total of 127 new recipes were added to the original 460. The committee still felt 200 orders were fine.
J. Pottery
Sixty mugs have been made and will be available by June 1. Maria suggested, based on the orders to date, that perhaps we should get him to make more utensil jars rather than mugs. The committee agreed.
K. Charcoal making/ iron ore
Ernie reported that he had 12 people to help with this project.
L. Fireworks
Nothing new to report.
M. Advertising/Mailer
Maria reported she will be preparing poster boards with the pamphlets to be placed at various commercial spots in the area. She will have a list of those commercial/public sites at the next meeting.
N. Public Safety
Ernie reported that Nittany Amateur Radio Club will help be providing radio communications at the event.
O. Yard Sale, Crafters & Book Sales:
Jerry reported she had nothing new to report on yard or craft sales.
Mike Bezilla, co-author of Rails to Penn State discussed with the committee the possibility of having the book available for purchase at the event. The book provides in depth history of the Bellefonte Central Railroad and its social and economical affects it had on the centre region while in operation. It includes information on Scotia and the ore banks found in that area. The committee was unanimous in having him join our event. Mike will be available to answer any questions visitors will have relative to the railroad system and its link to other Pennsylvania railroad systems.
P. Children Activities
An air inflated balloon for bouncing may be available for the children’s activities. Maria will check with Patty Higgins and Teresa Barger to get an up date on their plans.
Q. Radio Station
Maria reported that Diana Albright from 105.9 JOE FM will be attending the next meeting.
R. Entertainment
Ernie reported that Sam Spurrier would be interested in bringing his musicial group to the event to perform.
S. Legal
Ernie reported a sales tax number has been obtained due to the sales of pottery.
T. Wooden nickel

6. Next Meeting Schedule
The next meeting of the picture/book committee has been set for June 2, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. The next meeting of the bicentennial committee will be held on June 2, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
7. Adjournment
There being no further business to come before the committee, the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
